Maintaining your Prius could be very expensive

2008 Toyota Prius

Toyota's Prius may save you money on fuel, but more than make up for it in repairs.

The Toyota Prius is the quintessential example of a green car. Advocates tout the fuel economy as the answer to driving green and preserving the environment, but there are many vocal dissenters, too. ConsumerAffairs.com published a report that documents the incredible costs of maintaining this eco-mobile.

One example of replacing the battery pack cost an owner $4,500, and it was required with less than 150,000 miles on the clock. Another Prius owner had to have a transmission replaced, to the tune of $7,000, just past 116,000 miles. Other examples of extremely high maintenance costs abound on the site. Used Prius buyers may be risking huge repair costs down the road, even on models with less than 150,000 miles. Does owning a diesel-powered car still sound so bad?

$7000 isn't totally ridiculous for a new automatic transmission. In the mid-90s a friend's Lexus Q45 needed one at about 95,000 miles. The cost then was $7500.

FYO, please note that "ConsumerAffairs" is NOT the well-known Consumer Reports publication.ConsumerAffairs is a PR arm of a major litigation firm, and they tend to sensationalize any reports of trouble, perhaps to troll for clients. If you read the fine print on ConsumerAffairs' very own "submit a complaint" form, they are quite explicit that the information will be shared with attorneys who may contact you:"We work with attorneys with specific expertise in many areas of consumer law. It is sometimes necessary for them to contact you in order to determine whether there is a legal remedy for your complaint. There is no charge for any such consultation. Check below if you DO NOT want to be contacted by an attorney."According to the _real_ Consumer reports, the Prius is a "top pick" with better-than-average reliability. The Prius line has been produced for over 10 years, with the current style first introduced in the 2004 model year, so real-world average cost data should be available.
