We’ve been following the joint venture between Subaru and Toyota for what feels like forever. The two are teaming up to produce a pair of small, lightweight, rear-wheel-drive sports coupes that are nearly ready to go on sale. There was a chance Subaru would finally divulge the BRZ’s output at the LA show, but the brand is still only showing us a concept version of the car – in this case what we might expect from an STI-tuned BRZ.
Subaru has confirmed the 2.0-liter naturally aspirated H-4 engine will feature a square 86 x 86 mm bore and stroke, direct injection, and that the engine will be mounted as low and far back in the chassis as possible to balance weight distribution. Combine that low engine mounting with a carbon fiber roof and the BRZ STI should have one of the lowest centers of gravity of any production car, according to Subaru.
The STI concept features performance tires, an STI-tuned suspension, and Brembo brakes. It also has an opaque body, which is painted “WR Blue Pearl II”, an evolution of Subaru’s signature blue paint for STI models. The last BRZ concept we saw had a translucent body to show off the drivetrain and kept us guessing about the production car’s final design.
We know the production BRZ will debut at the Tokyo show later this month and look forward to getting the full details on this performance coupe before it enters production in the spring of 2012. There’s still no word on when an STI version will debut, but it’s a safe bet to assume that car will be at least a year behind the base BRZ.
