Los Angeles 2011: 2012 Lamborghini Gallardo LP 550-2 Spyder Revealed

Lamborghini is doing everything it can to make sure the Gallardo, the brand’s best-selling car, doesn’t go stale. Enter the 2012 Lamborghini Gallardo LP 550-2 Spyder, which debuts not long after the LP 570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale’s reveal at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.

It may seem like a strange time to be releasing a rear-wheel-drive convertible now that summer 2011 has come and gone, but in sunny Los Angeles, it all makes perfect sense. The LP550-2 Spyder will be the third two-wheel-drive model sold in the U.S. after the LP 550-2 Bicolore and the LP 550-2 Coupe. It’s also the third Spyder, which now joins the LP 570-4 Spyder Performante and the LP 560-4 Spyder.

As the name suggests, the new model will be tuned to put out 550 hp (with a 542-hp rating in the U.S.) from the familiar 5.2-liter V-10 engine. Torque is rated at 398 lb-ft and power is sent to the rear wheels via Lambo’s six-speed auto-clutch manual, the sole gearbox available for this model. Helping control all that power is a limited slip differential and Lambo’s ESP stability control system with a CORSA program, which increases the limits of drift angles before intervening. Lamborghini claims the LP 550-2 Sypder will need just 4.2 seconds to accelerate from 0-62 mph, while its top speed is limited to 198 mph. And if you really want to tangle up your hair, top speed cruising is still possible while the soft top is open.

The example Lamborghini displayed during a press event in L.A. was finished in a gorgeous metallic blue finish. Ten-spoke, 19-inch rims were wrapped with Pirelli PZero tires and subtle LP 550-2 badges adorned the lower rocker panel beyond the door edges. The interior is a standard Lamborghini affair with a rich leather interior finished in a classic two-tone beige and black color scheme. Lamborghini has yet to release pricing or on-sale date info.
