Los Angeles 2010: New 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG Joins the Party

The AMG badge is one of the most revered in the automotive industry, and this all-new 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG is the latest Daimler product to wear the esteemed emblem.

As previewed and promised, the AMG team's direct-injected, twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8, aka M157, takes up residence in this Mercedes to a tune of 518 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque at 14.5 turbo psi. The optional AMG Performance Package spools the turbochargers up to 18.8 psi to register 550 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. Sure, said numbers are less than the also-new CL63 and S63 AMG variants, but are nonetheless impressive and translate to a menacing exhaust note.

Stop-start technology and the Speedshift MCT 7-speed automatic help extract an estimated fuel economy of 16 city/21 highway mpg, in spite of 0-60 mph times of 4.4 seconds stock and 4.3 seconds with the extra AMG pack. The maximum speed governor gets bumped to 186 mph, courtesy of the AMG kit. The speed limiter for the standard CLS63 AMG is 155 mph.

After tipping the scales at an estimated 4277 pounds, Mercedes installed a revised front axle that enables a 0.94-inch-wider front track (and 0.74-inch-narrower rear track) compared to the 2012 CLS550. That should translate to some added nose stability in the turns and at higher speeds.

The three-link MacPherson front and multi-link air rear suspension setup is supported with an AMG Adaptive Suspension that actively adapts damping settings. Three driver-selectable suspension settings -- Comfort, Sport, and Sport plus -- allow for on-the-fly change. The AMG sports steering is electro-hydraulically boosted and targets superior feedback and feel.

Mammoth front and rear disc brake rotors measure 14.2 inches across while six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers clamp down on the rotating metal. A ceramic composite rotor set is available separately for customers who need the extra friction and fade resistance to keep the staggered 19-inch alloy wheels rolling at the right speeds.

In typical Mercedes fashion, there's a bevy of safety technology features. The aluminum doors are 24-percent lighter than the steel versions but just as strong. Active LED high-performance headlights, Attention Assist drowsiness monitor, and the Pre-Safe predictive protection system are all in cahoots to protect driver and occupants. You won't be able to turn your head or body without encountering an airbag somewhere in the refined, luxurious cabin.

Other parts within the AMG Performance Package are red-colored calipers, sport-tuned suspension, and a carbon-fiber engine cover and rear spoiler.
