Lincoln MKZ Hybrid Officially Rated at 45/45/45 MPG

The Lincoln MKZ has shot to the top of its (admittedly small) class of mid-size luxury hybrids in terms of miles per gallon: the American challenger's window sticker now officially reads 45 mpg in the city, on the highway, and as a combined rating.

We first reported a couple of months ago that Ford had benchmarked the MKZ Hybrid for 45 mpg, but the Environmental Protection Agency recently gave its stamp of approval to those numbers this month.

With the EPA's blessing, the 2013 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid officially becomes the most efficient mid-size luxury hybrid by a sizable margin. The next closest competitor is the 2013 Lexus ES 300h, which gets 40 mpg city / 39 mpg highway / 40 mpg combined. Blame that deficit on horsepower: while the MKZ pumps out 188 horsepower in total, the ES makes a round 200.

Those numbers are also both well above the ratings of more powerful challengers from BMW and Infiniti. The BMW ActiveHybrid 3 makes 335 net horsepower (the most of any non-M 3 Series), but gets only 25 mpg city / 33 mpg highway / 28 mpg combined. The Infiniti M35h, famous for being the world's fastest hybrid, makes 360 horsepower but gets just 27 mpg city / 32 mpg highway / 29 mpg combined. The MKZ also trumps the Buick Regal eAssist, which uses only a mild hybrid system. That car (which is some $7000 less than the MKZ Hybrid) gets 25 mpg city / 36 mpg highway / 29 mpg combined and makes 182 horsepower.

At $36,800 including destination, the MKZ Hybrid (which starts at the same price as the conventional gasoline MKZ) is also the least expensive full-hybrid luxury sedan. The ES300h starts at $39,725, while both the M35h and ActiveHybrid 3 start at more than $50,000.
