It's been anticipated by racing enthusiasts for years, and has been the topic of no shortage of controversy, and some even doubted if it would come to fruition. But the Circuit of the Americas outside of Austin, Texas, was completed just in the nick of time, and after a five-year hiatus, Formula One finally returned to the U.S. Sebastian Vettel, the F1 points leader for the season, held the pole position, but Lewis Hamilton ultimately emerged victorious.
The 25 year-old Vettel was favored to win the first F1 race on American soil since 2007, but fell behind Hamilton around lap 41, as Hamilton took the opportunity to take the lead. The Austin race is the next-to-last race of the F1 season, with Sao Paulo being the last race next week.
Despite Hamilton's victory, he's still 83 points behind Vettel for the season, and fourth in points overall. Austin marked Hamilton's fourth victory for the season. Vettel has racked up 5 wins this season.
Rounding out the top five finishers were Ferrari's Fernando Alonso in third, and Felipe Massa in fourth, and Hamilton's Mercedes-Benz teammate Jenson Button in fifth. Lotus' Kimi Raikkonen finished sixth, and Michael Schumacher, former seven-time F1 world champion, finished 16th. Schumacher reportedly plans to retire from F1 following next week's race in Brazil.
