Land Rover Defender Vineyard Edition Debuts, Puzzles

When first presented with the Land Rover Defender Vineyard edition, you have to wonder if the product of its namesake was heavily involved in its inception. Built by Italian coachbuilder Fuoriserie Torino, this unique take on Land Rover’s rugged workhorse SUV may prove that fashion and utility are, in fact, mutually exclusive concepts.

Inspired by the colors of the autumn harvest, Fuoriserie Torino decided to outfit this Defender 90 for leisurely cruises out to the vineyards.  For color, the coachbuilder went with a leaf-shape camoflage motif with red, pink, and beige hues -- precisely the colors that come to mind when dreaming of autumn. The Defender also receives hand-crafted pine and teak wood accents, which are applied to the door sill guards, front fender step plates, and the spare wheel out back. The Vineyard also includes a winch and a custom roof basket -- both of which could come in handy when venturing outside to inspect your grapes.

Although we recognize the skill and effort that went into creating the Vineyard edition, we have to question the reasoning behind it. The Land Rover Defender is among the most capable vehicles in the world, and can regularly be seen thriving in places where other cars would simply wither and die. This Defender should be out scaling an erupting volcano, not nurturing young pinot grigios -- and even if it is actively working in a vineyard, are any of these baubles even necessary? The Defender's basic design has more than proven itself in off-road and commercial use over the past 50 years without needing many -- or any -- major revisions.

We get that the Defender 90 is occasionally marketed as a premium SUV these days, but the whole concept of the Vineyard Edition seems to clash with the Defender's exploratory, do-anything spirit. Might we suggest saving the opulent, vino-centric treatment for one of Land Rover's more posh models -- the Range Rover Autobiography, perhaps?
