The Chinese market’s insatiable appetite for new cars extends to Italian supercars, and Lamborghini is likely to sell more cars in China than in the U.S. this year. Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann told Automotive News that, “I believe China will become our most important market this year.”
“The Lamborghini brand has very strong appeal in China,” Winkelmann said in a statement at the Shanghai motor show. He said China is currently the company’s second most-important region after the U.S.
According to Automotive News, one-fifth of the orders for the new Aventador, which is sold out for the first 18 months of production, are from Chinese buyers. The demand for Lamborghinis continues to grow in China: the company will open six new dealerships there this year, for a total of 20, and sales of the Italian exotics in China grew 150 percent from 2009 to 2010.
Competitor Ferrari also is enjoying strong successes in China. Last year, Ferrari sold about 300 cars in China, an increase of 44 percent versus 2009 levels.
