Kia’s Top Designer Supports Rear-Drive V-8 Sedan

We’ve been hearing rumors on a premium, rear-wheel drive Kia sedan for quite some time now, riding on parent company Hyundai's rear-drive platform.  Codenamed K-9, the new new top-of-the-range model could sit above the Optima, or even the upcoming Cadenza (the purported Amanti replacement).

Making headlines is whether the K-9 will be available with the second-generation Hyundai Genesis V-8 engine. Already being rumored that the premium sedan would pack a V-6 (also from Hyundai), a V-8 would bring it even closer to the likes of BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

Chief design officer Peter Schreyer -- formerly of Audi -- has helped to enliven Kia's offerings with eye-catching designs including the new Optima and Sportage, giving the entry-level automaker a stylish edge toward over established mainstream automakers like Toyota and Honda.

While Schreyer would not talk directly about the K-9 when recently questioned by The Sydney Morning Herald "Drive", his enthusiasm for such a project was obvious.

"I think when you can work with the rear-wheel drive proportion it is always good for the designer," he said. "For a big sedan it is the better proportion; a fantastic proportion of course."

With Kia staying tight-lipped about the new sedan, we’ve picked up several hints that the K-9 might be a possibility. Kia USA officials, not surprisingly,  stated “KMA has not announced any plans or information about such a model. “

The question is: does Kia really need a rear-wheel drive? Tell us what you think.

I wonder how much the K-9 will cost.
