Kia Rio, Honda Civic Among Tow Car Winners in U.K.

If you regularly tow trailers, chances are, you have a pickup or SUV in your garage or driveway. People that buy Honda Civics and Kia Rios in the U.S. get them as economical commuters, not tow rigs. But those two familiar nameplates are among nine class winners of The Camping and Caravanning Club's 2013 Tow Car Awards, in collaboration with the U.K.'s What Car? and Practical Caravan magazines.

Not surprisingly, eight out of the nine winners were diesel-powered, with the lone petrol burner being the 2014 Mazda 6 Sport hatchback. The overall winner for the 2013 Tow Car Awards was the Skoda Octavia 2.0 TDI, the Czech-branded version of what we know as the Volkswagen Jetta. The Volkswagen Group had another winner in the form of the Volkswagen Passat Estate 2.0 TDI BlueMotion, a model no longer available in the U.S. since the introduction of the North American-specific 2012 Passat, which is offered only as a sedan.

The one vehicle on the list that would make some sense to American consumers was the Land Rover Discovery 4 (sold in the U.S. as the LR4), powered by a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6. The Discovery won the 4188+ lb category, and was hailed by the editors as "the ultimate, tow-anything tow car." Maybe on that side of the Atlantic, but The 30,000-lb rated 2013 Ram 3500 HD would probably get the crown here in the colonies.
