Jeep CEO Hints At Diesel, Pickup Options For Next-Gen Wrangler

The annual Moab Easter Jeep Safari often allows Jeep designers and engineers alike to play with some fun new designs, and even some cool updates coming to Jeep’s production lineup. Last year's Moab Easter Safari led to the introduction of the color Dozer Yellow, and the Mopar JK-8 Independence pickup conversion kit for the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. One fantasy vehicle on the wishlists of many Jeep enthusiasts is a diesel-powered Wrangler pickup truck. In a new 2012 Moab Easter Safari video, Jeep brand CEO Mike Manley may have just hinted at that possibility for the next-generation Wrangler.

"For me as we think about how Wrangler develops into the future, there are a few things we get constant feedback on. One is diesel and one is pickup," Manley said near the end of a new Jeep-issued video showcasing its latest Moab Easter Safari vehicles. This year's Easter Safari included two different takes on a Jeep pickup truck—the retro J-12 Concept and the cab-over-engine Mighty FC Concept. Both the Jeep J-12 and Jeep Mighty FC were built off the Wrangler Unlimited's chassis, and show that a pickup truck is on the forefront of Jeep's mind as it gets ready for the iconic off-roader's next generation.

"Obviously you need to be careful when you take a vehicle like Wrangler for its next generation," Manley said, "But factoring those things in and the feedback that we've had right now when we're in the early stages of thinking about the next Jeep Wrangler is very important because then we can think about how we design those things maybe into that vehicle program."

Taking enthusiasts’ desires into consideration as Jeep begins development on the next-generation Jeep Wrangler might just be the first sign of good things to come from Jeep's future icon.
