Insure.com Names the Most and Least Expensive Vehicles to Insure

Did you look into insurance rates before buying your last car? In some cases, the high premiums some models carry can prove to be a deal breaker. Insure.com gathered data and published the most and least expensive vehicles to insure.

Insure.com's study investigated rates for a single 40-year-old male driver who commutes 12 miles to work, has a clean driving record, and is purchasing a 100/300/50 policy with a $500 deductible. Rates for 10 different zip codes were obtained from six different carriers, and were compiled into the average costs you see below.

Least Expensive For the most part, the 20 least-expensive cars to insure are almost all compact SUVs and Minivans. A front-wheel-drive Mazda Tribute I is reportedly the least expensive to insure, carrying an average national premium of $1070.25. Even the most expensive of this group -- a base GMC Canyon two-wheel-drive pickup -- is still reasonably affordable, carrying a premium of $1152.39.

Most Expensive With great power comes great responsibility -- and from an insurance carrier's perspective, even greater risk. We're not too surprised to see that Insure.com's 20 most expensive cars are mostly high-powered exotics. We're not too surprised to see the hot Porsche 911 GT2 rank as the most expensive at $2943.78, but we're a little curious as to why the Dodge Viper SRT10 roadster costs $36 more to insure than the coupe. Perhaps the hardtop's higher top speed (202 mph versus 197) is part of the formula.

1. Porsche 911 GT2: $2943.78 2. Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG: $2863.03 3. Dodge Viper SRT10 Coupe: $2851.89 4. Porsche Panamera Turbo: $2837.39 5. Dodge Viper SRT10 Roadster: $2815.90 6.
