Infiniti is considering options at both ends of the spectrum as it looks to expand sales.
Nissan’s luxury brand wants a large car to replace the discontinued Q45. The new vehicle would be the brand’s flagship and help it compete globally against the likes of BMW and Mercedes, said Shiro Nakamura, Nissan’s global design director. But the current market trend away from larger vehicles might slow such a car’s development, he added.
At the same time, Infiniti is considering a small car at the bottom of its lineup. If a business case can be made for the small car, it would likely be rear-wheel drive, Nakamura said, adding that it was at least three years away. Such a vehicle could compete with BMW’s 1-series coupe.
