Hyundai's Accent Subcompact Receives Surprise Reveal at Montreal Auto Show

The 2012 Hyundai Accent had its international debut this week at the Montreal Auto Show. The Canadian-spec Accent is instantly recognizable from the front by styling shared with the compact Elantra four-door.

We first saw the body style of the Accent as the Verna, when that car debuted at the Beijing Auto Show. The Accent's Canadian reveal gives us the closest look yet at what car Hyundai will throw into the subcompact car segment, a class that's incredibly different from when the current-generation car was first thrust into the market.

In Canada, the Accent will receive a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with direct injection and dual continuously variable valve timing on the intake and exhaust camshafts. The engine reportedly makes 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque at 4700 rpm and will be mated to a six-speed automatic or manual transmission.

Even though this Accent has more power, the current car is mated to a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy will no doubt improve. The 2011 Accent gets 27/36 mpg city/highway with the automatic and 26-28/34-36 mpg with the manual.

In the U.S., only a three-door hatchback and four-door Accent sedan are sold, but that could change with the 2012 model. In Canada, it appears the Accent will only be offered in four- and five-door forms. Hyundai claims the Canadian five-door Accent hatchback has more cargo volume than the Ford Fiesta and Mazda2 but less than a Nissan Versa and Honda Fit.

Not a "surprise", it was a planned reveal from the Fall of 2010. I'm in Montreal and sat in the Accent sedan that was on the show floor (the 5-door was on a podium). Sharp-looking, and more mature than Fit, 2, Fiesta and Sonic. Seniors in Canada enjoy small cars, and unlike other B-class offerings, this one won't turn them off. For the rest of us, it still looks good, and 138hp in this size can't be boring. PS BMW X1 also on the show floor, on sale June 2011 in Canada. Ditto Chevy Orlando, on sale in September.
