Most automakers are still previewing what they’re bringing to the 2012 Detroit auto show, but Hyundai’s now hinting at what it has in store for the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in March. According to the automaker, it’ll preview the next generation of its famed “fluidic sculpture” design language with the new I-oniq concept.
Other than providing a name and a shadowy rendering, Hyundai hasn’t said much about the I-oniq concept. From the looks of it, the I-oniq looks to be some sort of shooting brake--while it has the character lines and hatchback from something like the i30 or i40 five-door models (known here as the Elantra Touring and Sonata), its roofline slopes too much to be a simple wagon or hatchback.
Like many of Hyundai’s recent Geneva show concepts, the I-oniq’s design was orchestrated by its European design center, which is located in Russelshiem, Germany. Thomas Burkle, Hyundai’s European chief designer, says the “two strong arched curves define the silhouette of the I-oniq, creating a playful contrast between the sharp character lines and soft but muscular features.”
Expect further information to emerge closer to the I-oniq’s official Geneva debut in March.
