On October 1, a second shift of Hyundai Santa Fe production will join the Kia Sorento in Georgia. With Santa Fe production shifting to the Kia plant, Hyundai's Montgomery, Alabama plant will be free to produce more Sonatas than previously possible.
Through the first seven months of the year, Sonata annual sales have surpassed 100,000 units, a mark that took until November during the 2009 model year for the last-generation car.
Kia's plant in Georgia can build as many as 300,000 vehicles a year. The second shift has resulted in a few more jobs; total employment at the plant is up to about 1900.
