Hyundai HED-6 ix-ONIC Concept Revealed

Want to see the next-generation Hyundai Tucson? Take a good hard look at the new HED-6 ix-ONIC concept. Scheduled for a debut at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, the concept gives a good indication of where the next Tucson may be headed.

The concept stays true to the sketch that the company teased us with earlier this month. Its body is round and marked with dramatic character lines that flow over the wheels and around the hood and trunk. One interesting feature is a complex rear window shape, made possible by crafting it from Lexan plastic instead of glass.

Hyundai says the concept's shape will carry over to production, although we may see some small alterations to the rest of the vehicle. The lights, bumpers, and materials may be slightly different in the production model. The name will also change to the iX35 which is much easier to say than HED-6 ix-ONIC.

One thing that won't change when the crossover goes into production is its engine. It is equipped with a 175-hp, 1.6-liter turbocharged I-4 with direct injection. Hyundai said it will start producing the new engine later this year and that it may find its way into other models like the i30.

The iX35 will be built in a Slovakian Kia factory that is already producing the 2010 Sportage. Expect to see a production version of the new crossover as early as the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
