The 2013 Hyundai Genesis sedan gets an updated navigation system for the new model year, but the automaker has also announced the discontinuation of the 4.6-liter V-8 engine.

In an effort to simplify the Genesis lineup, Hyundai has discontinued the 385-hp 4.6-liter V-8, leaving the 5.0 V-8 -- with 429 hp and 376 lb-ft on tap -- in the 5.0 R-Spec model, though the non R-Spec Genesis trim with the 5.0-liter V-8 has been dropped as well. The Genesis 5.0 R-Spec and the base Genesis with the 3.8-liter V-6 that puts out 333 hp and 291 lb-ft  will still be paired with the eight-speed automatic.

If you're asking why the 4.6-liter has been given the boot, Hyundai spokesman Jim Trainor told us it's a matter of making the buying process more simple. Take rates may also play a large part, as Trainor says it's been 70/30 percent for V-6/V-8 engines and we wouldn’t be surprised to see the six-cylinder model play an increasingly important role in the future. Though official pricing has yet to be released, the 2012 Genesis 4.6 is currently $1000 less than the Genesis 5.0, which is priced $1000 below the 5.0 R-Spec model. The Genesis sedan remains a rear-drive-only sedan, though an all-wheel-drive model will be offered when the car is fully redesigned.

Moving inside, the optional 8-inch screen has been improved with an enhanced controller that still uses the same rotating dial with a joystick-like function. The new display has been touched up with a more intuitive interface, while navigation features an improved layout. Voice commands have also been updated, and the entire system can be now accessed by new "hot keys" that are said to give drivers more control over the system.
