Hyundai revealed in a press release that it has finished development of its own six-speed transmission, becoming the third auto company in the world to develop a six-speed transmission in-house. The new transmission will be fitted to 16 models, starting with the Hyundai Azera and including the redesigned Sante Fe due in 2009 or 2010.
The new gearbox is 41mm shorter and has 62 fewer parts compared to the five-speed that it replaces. On the Hyundai Azera, the new transmission will boost fuel economy by more than 12.2 percent, provides 2.5 percent faster acceleration from 0 to 62 mph and an 11 percent improvement in passing power, and happens to be 12kg lighter than the five-speed.
Hyundai did not say specifically which other vehicles will receive the new six-speed transmission.
