Honda Won't Try to Poach Toyota Customers

General Motors and Ford may be targeting the Toyota faithful in light of the company’s recent recall headaches, but Honda has chosen to abstain.

In a letter issued to Honda and Acura dealers last week, John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda, declared the firm “will not react in a predatory way towards either Toyota or Toyota customers,” and asks its dealers to refrain from commenting on the matter. Mendel suggests if dealers are asked about the situation, they should point out that Honda vehicles are not affected by the recall, and that the company knows of no similar issues in its vehicles. Further, though Honda uses parts from the same supplier (CTS) that produced the flawed gas pedals, it does not use any of the same parts as Toyota.

Although the letter reveals Honda’s intent to take the high road, its arrival comes at an interesting time. Honda itself recalled nearly 646,000 first-generation Fits -- 140,000 of them in the U.S. -- to replace a defective power window switch that could ignite a fire.
