In order to build the 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid at its Marysville, Ohio plant, the automaker will invest $23 million, adding 95,000-square-feet to the plant and hiring about 50 workers.
The 2014 Accord Hybrid and Accord Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) sedans use Honda’s first two-motor hybrid system that consists of a 137-hp 2.0-liter, Atkinson cycle I-4 used in tandem with a 124-kW traction electric motor, which can function as an electric continuously variable transmission (e-CVT), and a 105-kW electric motor for power generation. Total peak output is rated at 196 hp. The non-plug-in Honda Accord Hybrid is expected to be EPA-rated at 49/45 mpg city/highway, though official ratings haven’t been released. The Accord PHEV has been rated at 115 MPGe with a range of 13 miles on electric power.
Pricing for the 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid sedan hasn’t been release, but expect it to fall closer to the $34,220 Accord V6 Touring than the $40,470 Accord PHEV. The Accord PHEV model goes on sale January 15 in New York and California, where it has been granted HOV access. While the Accord PHEV sedan is currently being built in Japan, production could move to the U.S. in a few years. Though the Honda Accord PHEV has styling that’s clearly different from the regular Accord sedans, expect the non-plug-in Accord Hybrid to share most styling cues with the regular Accord I-4 and V-6 models.
The 2014 Accord Hybrid won’t be the first Honda hybrid built in the U.S. as the Civic Hybrid and Acura ILX Hybrid are built in Greensburg, Indiana. The Toyota Camry Hybrid is built in Kentucky, while the Ford Fusion Hybrid and Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid are built in Mexico.
