High Five: Alfa Romeo's Mille Miglia Team Pulls Five Cars from Company's Museum

BMW's fleet of 328s -- including a stunning 328 Kamm Coupe replica -- will catch plenty of attention at this year's Mille Miglia, but BMW isn't the only automaker fielding a field of classics in the historic event. Alfa Romeo revealed today it's sending no fewer than five vehicles to the 2010 race.

The Official Automobilismo Storico Alfa Romeo Team is comprised of a handful of cars plucked straight from Alfa’s own corporate museum As you can imagine, that collection includes some beautiful rides. Cars culled from the collection include three different 6Cs -- one 1928 6C 1500 Super Sport, a 1937 6C 2300 B, and the hot 1930 6C 1750 Gran Sport. One 8C -- a 1931 8C 2300 Le Mans -- is also joining the group, as is a 1956 1900 Super Sprint. Alfa Romeo also invited three cars from private owners, including two 6Cs -- a 1932 6C 1750 Gran Sport and a 1931 6C Cabriolet -- and a 1955 Giulietta Sprint. The Le Mans suffix on the 8C 2300 LM is particularly fitting to that car. With first owner Henry Birkin behind the wheel, the car managed to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1931. In this outing, the 8C will be piloted by Prince Bernhard of Holland, with Dutch architect Roberto Meyer serving as a co-driver and navigator. The 1930 6C 1750 Gran Sport, however, has its roots intertwined with the Mille Miglia road race. A similar car was used by Tazio Nuvolari in the 1930 Mille Miglia, where he managed to average over 62 mph for the entire route (a record) and gain a first place finish. Two other Alfas -- both 6C 1750 Gran Sports -- also managed to snag second and third place finishes. Alfa Romeo sees the Mille Miglia not only as a celebration of its past, but as a way to market its future. In fact, the automaker will showcase its latest model -- the Giulietta -- at Mille Miglia showcases in both Brescia and Rome, and provide Giuliettas, MiTos, and 159s for use as official support vehicles.
