Gymkhana Grid Racing Series Debuts This Weekend with Ken Block Invitational

If you're no good playing by others' rules, why not make up your own? Ken Block may have had a disappointing season on the World Rally Car circuit this year, but the action sports star-turned-rally phenomenon may have a chance to shine again in his newest creation: the Gymkhana Grid racing series.

As the series name suggests, the Gymkhana Grid will center around the tire-shredding driving style Block popularized through his series of Gymkhana videos. Some 25 professional and amateur drivers will descend upon the Toyota Speedway in Irwindale, California, to compete in the kickoff event, known as the Ken Block Invitational.

"Ever since we filmed the first Gymkhana clip, I've been itching to not only get my professional racing friends to be able to come and play with me in this incredibly fun, sideways and technical motorsport, but also to make it possible for amateur drivers to participate, too " Block said in a prepared release. "Gymkhana Grid does exactly that."

Diversity seems to be the spice of Gymkhana Grid life. Although we don't know what amateur drivers are throwing their hats into the ring, Block has invited Travis Pastrana, Vaughn Gittin Jr., Dave Mirra, and Tanner Foust to square off in the first race. A wide variety of high-performance vehicles are expected to participate, as the series allows for front-, rear-, and all-wheel-drive vehicles, along with vehicles fitted with either super- or turbocharged engines.

Competition will involve two drivers facing off against each other on the wild course, which calls for figure eights, slaloms, power slides, and doughnuts. Want to watch for yourself? Tickets for the two-day event (practice and qualifying runs occur on December 3, while actual eliminations are scheduled for December 4) run roughly $30 when purchased online.
