Gullwing America Reboots 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SC

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster is a lot of things -- fast, loud, retro—but one Eastern European gearhead decided to maximize the SLS’ retro factor by turning it into this, the 300 SLC convertible.

The project was completed by a tuning house/coachbuilder called Gullwing America, which has made a name for itself recreating old Mercedes Gullwing models with new technology underneath. One of its best creations thus far was the Panamericana 300 SL, a modern recreation of the gullwing with a tube chassis and custom aluminum bodywork, as well as a 3.5-liter Mercedes V-6 or 5.5-liter Mercedes V-8.

This time around GWA was tasked with turning the SLS AMG Roadster into a homage to the iconic Mercedes-Benz 1955 300SC roadster. In a nod to modern tech, however, GWA left some of the SLS’ key features like the pop-up rear spoiler and -- naturally -- the 6.2-liter V-8 engine and dual-clutch automatic transmission. The headlights are LEDs; the convertible bodystyle stays, but GWA removed the power-operated softtop in favor of a removable hardtop (in a nod to the original 300 SC). The package is topped off with an adjustable suspension, a custom exhaust system, and 21-inch front and 22-inch rear wheels.

Considering that this car is a one-off creation, there’s no telling how much it’s worth, although we’d guess it’s many times more than the $197,005 base price of the SLS AMG Roadster (it’s based on the old, non-GT model). Then again, the owner (an anonymous Eastern European million- or billionaire) scored himself a one-of-a-kind car -- perhaps that alone makes it worth the price.
