Grand Dreams: Larger Range Rover Evoque Reportedly Under Development

Autocar is reporting a bigger Range Rover Evoque may be in the cards as a result of the new crossover’s success. In just its second full month on sale, the Evoque outsold the Range Rover SUV by a hair, but as the flagship continues to shift upmarket, room is left for a new variant. According to Autocar, the so-called Grand Evoque would slot in-between the volume-leading Range Rover Sport and the Evoque, and would roughly measure a foot longer than the current Evoque with a total length of about 183.7 inches. Although it will sit on the same architecture as the Evoque, the bigger Evoque would have distinctive visual and functional characteristics of its own, including a possible third-row seat. The added length would likely add to the rear overhang dimension, but potentially provide for a larger cargo area. Mechanically, a high-output 1.8-liter turbocharged I-4 may find its way under the hood, possibly being a part of a new range of four-cylinder engines produced at a the new Jaguar Land Rover plant in the U.K. As has been suggested for the standard-length model, a hybrid variant may also be a possibility. Lightweight materials would be used in the crossover’s construction, helping improve fuel efficiency. Autocar says the Grand Evoque will likely be launched in 2015 with a starting price of 35,000 British Pounds, which is roughly $54,576 using today’s exchange rate. What remains to be seen is if there's truly room in Range Rover's lineup between the Evoque and the next-generation Range Rover Sport. Source: Autocar

The Evoque is going to end up being quite the versatile springboard for Land Rover. A five-door, a coupe, a high performance "R" variant, potentially a convertible, and a seven-seater. Probably hybrids somewhere down the line, too. Let's hope the Evoque finally manages to shake off the reliability woes suffered by the brand over the years.
