Gran Turismo 5 Academy’s Top 16 U.S. Finalists Headed to Silverstone for Final Elimination

From a field of more than 53,000 would-be racers, 16 of the top competitors from the U.S. have been selected to travel to Silverstone in England for the final elimination round of the GT Academy.

"Leveraging the power of the PlayStation 3, along with the precision and realism of Gran Turismo 5, we have narrowed the field to the nation's top 16 drivers and it has been a fierce race for the finish," said Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President of Product Marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment America. "We look forward to getting our finalists behind the wheel at the Silverstone circuit as we get one step closer to crowning our first GT Academy winner for   the United States."

Once on the ground at the world-famous Silverstone Race Circuit, the 16 competitors will enter a week-long race driver “boot camp” where the gamers will actually get behind the wheel and demonstrate their real-world driving skills. Their performance in the Nissan racecars will be judged by a panel of racing professionals who will evaluate their skill, performance and aptitude as racecar drivers.

The victorious driver, who will be announced at an undisclosed date, will become the official GT Academy Winner for the U.S. and will be given a spot on a real Nissan race team where they will be trained further and will compete in at least one undisclosed race.

Sound silly to you? Don’t forget, the 2008 winner of the GT Academy just helped his team take second place in the LMP2 class at the 12 Hours of Sebring and 30th overall. Stay tuned for more coverage on the U.S. GT Academy and the winner.
