We’re used to seeing Peter Brock tune small Japanese sports cars, but they’ve typically worn a Datsun (or Nissan) nameplate, not a Mazda badge. Still, to help celebrate Brock at this year’s Walter Mitty Challenge at Road Atlanta, Mazda built the man -- and former teammate John Morton -- a track-prepped MX-5 Miata in his famed BRE livery.
Brock may be best known for penning the legendary Shelby Daytona Coupe, but following his stint with Shelby American, he formed his own company, Brock Racing Enterprises. Among the many projects BRE was involved with was campaigning a number of Datsuns -- including the 510, 240Z, and 2000 “Fairlady” roadster -- in the SCCA and Trans-Am series. With Morton on board, the team found success. It won the SCCA national championship in 1970 and 1971, and managed to do the same in the 2.5 Trans-Am series in 1971 and 1972.
Mazda isn’t exactly sure how the notion of doing an MX-5 in BRE colors came about, but Brock loves the finished project nonetheless.
“It’s been some 37 years since a factory supported car in BRE livery sat on a racing grid,” said Brock. “Seeing the new MX-5 in our traditional colors almost brings tears to my eyes. It’s wonderful that Mazda, a company that really loves, understands, and supports racing of all kinds, has seen fit to honor our team’s great racing history with this new spirit of competition.” Morton was similarly pleased with Mazda’s offer for them to drive the new MX-5 with its historic livery at the SCCA event held with the Walter Mitty Challenge.
“This Walter Mitty weekend is very special for me because it is bringing together so many facets that were significant in my racing career,” said Morton. “First is the reunion and recognition of our championship-winning BRE team that Peter Brock developed in the late '60s and that led me to two SCCA National Championships and two 2.5 Trans-Am Championships in the early '70s. Second is the opportunity Mazda has given me to race in a professional race in my sixth decade of competition.
“Twenty-six years ago, I shared the BF Goodrich-sponsored, class-winning Mazda Lola at Le Mans, which was the beginning of a long relationship with both companies. The Mazda MX-5 I will be racing at the Mitty, the only real modern sports car in mass production, is a reincarnation of the cars that started this sport in America in the late forties.”
Look for the both Brock and Morton to field the #46 MX-5 in the SCCA Pro Racing Playboy MX-5 Cup event, which Mazda will host as part of the Mitty event.
