GM Sales Jump 7.2 Percent on Strong Pickup Sales

General Motors went four for four in February 2013, increasing sales across all four of its brands and boosting its monthly sales by 7.2 percent to 224,314 vehicles. We’ve collected the winners and losers of last month:

Winner: Buick Verano

Buick’s little sedan made a big difference last month: it jumped 147.1 percent over February 2012 and posted 4171 sales. That was enough to pass the LaCrosse and take the spot as Buick’s second most-popular vehicle, behind the Enclave crossover.

Winner: Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra

GM’s pickup duo sold a massive 55,776 combined units last month, enough to eke out a win over the mighty Ford F-Series (the F-Series continues to be the most popular single nameplate). Both the mass-market Silverado and up-market Sierra had similar showings: the Silverado was up 28.9 percent to 41,643 units, while the Sierra climbed 25 percent to 14,133 units. General Motors gives credit to a rebounding housing market (which means more construction companies and contractors buying pickups), but we’d point instead to the trucks’ large incentive spending—up to $3000, according to Automotive News—for the increased deliveries.

Winner: Buick Enclave

Buick’s crossover is the least popular of the three Lambda siblings (it’s outsold by the GMC Acadia and Chevrolet Traverse), but not by much. While the Acadia has only climbed 2.7 percent so far in 2013, the redesigned Enclave is up 39 percent. It finished February up 25.8 percent after selling 5241 vehicles, making it Buick’s most popular nameplate.

Winner: Chevrolet Volt

The Volt continues to climb: the extended-range electric vehicle sold 1626 units last month, 58.9 percent higher than last year. Year-to-date, the Volt is up 70.1 percent.

Loser: Chevrolet Malibu

The Malibu isn’t having a great 2013: it’s down 11.6 percent year-to-date. It didn’t help that sales last month were off 25.9 percent to 14,817 units. It’ll remain to be seen if Chevrolet’s recent price cut and imminent, reported emergency refresh (for the 2014 model year) will help sales.

Loser: Cadillac CTS

Sales of Cadillac CTS was down 43.9 percent last month, down to 2566 units, but there’s a good reason: it’s about to be replaced. The next-gen CTS will debut at the New York Auto Show in a matter of weeks, so it’s understandable that sales and supplies of the aging second-generation car would are dwindling.

Losers: Buick LaCrosse and Regal

The Buick LaCrosse and Regal are rare breeds: they’re Buicks that didn’t post sales increases last month. The Regal was off 44.1 percent last month, down to 1474 units, while the larger LaCrosse dipped 29.9 percent to 3667 units sold. Crucially, the Regal was out-sold last month by the brand new Buick Encore crossover. Not so fast, says General Motors: both of these nameplates will have redesigned models on the floor of the New York show next month, so stay tuned.
