GM Reports January Sales Up 23 Percent

A new year is often looked at as an opportunity for a fresh start, and General Motors is certainly starting fresh with a 23-percent sales boost over 2010.

“January was a good month and signaled a solid start to the new year for each of our divisions,” said Don Johnson, GM’s vice president of U.S. Sales Operations.  “Our results were driven by gains across the board in all segments, with our newest models leading the way.”

In total, GM moved 178,896 vehicles in January 2011 compared to 145,098 in January of the previous year. GM reports that just 22 percent of its January sales were to fleets, a seven-percent decrease from the prior year. Retail sales, meanwhile, were up34 percent with the strongest gains coming from passenger cars, followed by crossovers and trucks.

At the brand level, 13,269 of GM’s sales came from Buick, a 32-percent gain over January 2010. Much of that gain came somewhat surprisingly on the back of the aging Lucerne, which saw a 62-percent spike in sales for the month. The Enclave posted a modest seven-percent gain while the LaCrosse saw its fires dwindle a bit and posted an 11-percent loss. The Regal is hanging in there with 2335 sales.

Cadillac, despite a 49-percent increase in sales, still couldn’t quite catch Buick with only 12,580 vehicles delivered. Unlike Buick, though, every one of Cadillac’s models posted gains. The CTS jumped 70-percent on strong sales of the new Coupe and actually eclipsed the SRX sales by a few hundred units. The STS and the DTS must have found their ways onto the clearance rack, as both posted large gains as well. Even the Escalade got in on the action, with double-digit gains for each variant.

GMC sales were likewise impressive with 27,658 sold for a gain of 30 percent. As always, the Sierra led the way on volume with a handsome 46-percent improvement in sales. The Terrain overtook the Acadia for the month by a few hundred sales, with the smaller ‘ute posting a 48-percent gain to the larger truck’s five-percent improvement. The only model to lose sales was the old Canyon compact pickup, which only fell by a single percent.

GM’s bread-and-butter brand, Chevrolet, had a similar month. Chevy’s 125,389 deliveries made for a 19-percent improvement in sales with the Silverado leading the way in terms of volume. The new Cruze sedan continues to do well with 13,631 delivered and an additional 321 Volts were sold in January. On the flip side of the coin, though, things were different. Corvette sales dropped 16 percent and Camaro sales fell some 11 percent. The Impala, meanwhile, inexplicably posted a 39-percent gain while the Malibu dropped 14 percent.
