GM Expands OnStar Services To Mexico

#GM

General Motors has a gift for its buyers in Mexico: the company's OnStar telematics service will be available in Mexico from next spring. That's the fourth country in which OnStar is offered, following earlier launches of the system in the U.S., Canada, and China. Just as it does here, Mexico's version of OnStar will offer features like stolen vehicle tracking, remote door unlocking, turn-by-turn navigation, automatic emergency crash notification, and the RemoteLink smartphone application. "We are confident these services will be quite popular with Mexican consumers," General Motors de Mexico president Ernesto M. Hernandez said in a statement. GM launched OnStar here in 1996, and the service currently has 5.5 million subscribers. It was expanded to Canada in 1998, and OnStar launched in China in 2009. The service has 428,000 subscribers in Canada and 450,000 in China. GM will reveal which of its Mexican-market vehicles can be equipped with OnStar, and how much the service will cost, closer to the launch date. For now, the company has only announced that OnStar goes live in Mexico "sometime in 2013." Source: GM
