A third shift will create 750 jobs, GM says, with employees starting to arrive in the second quarter of this year. The additional truck production will begin in the third quarter of 2011. Last year, the plant produced 115,000 heavy duty trucks.
“I want to thank the Local 598 members for their hard work in building the best pickups on the road,” said UAW Local 598 Chairman Dana Rouse. “Adding the third shift allows us to call back some former Flint Assembly workers and provide employment for others who have been laid off.”
At first, the new jobs will be filled by those who were formerly laid off at Flint Assembly and now work at other plants. In September 2010, a GMC Sierra Denali 3500HD truck became the 13 millionth vehicle to roll off the assembly line at the plant since it opened in 1947. Previously, Flint Assembly has built the Chevrolet Corvette, Bel Air, Monte Carlo, and Suburban though it appears that production of heavy duty trucks is safe for at least a few years.
