German Tuner AC Schnitzer Transforms BMW Z4 into Eco-Tuned 99d Concept Car

AC Schnitzer is a well-recognized tuner in the European aftermarket scene, and its efforts continue today with its 99d concept. Based on the current BMW Z4, the 99d is all about balancing performance with eco-friendliness.

AC Schnitzer started with the Z4 roadster and swapped in the diesel four-cylinder from the overseas 320d EfficientDynamics. Without telling us exactly how the engine was modified, we’ve learned the diesel-powered Z4 produces 188 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The factory-stock 320d mill makes 163 horsepower and 280 pound-feet. The German tuning firm would only go as far as calling its performance enhancements “Efficient Performance,” but we’d bet there’s some ECU remapping involved.

With the extra power and a weight-shedding strategy in place, the 99d goes from 0-62 mph in 6.9 seconds and can hit a top speed of 146 mph, which isn’t bad for an efficiency-minded, four-cylinder diesel. AC Schnitzer says the 99d concept consumes just 3.8 liters of diesel fuel for every 100 kilometers driven. In America, that works out to around 62 mpg.

Given its fuel economy, it’s relatively clean emissions-wise. AC Schnitzer cut the amount of tailpipe carbon dioxide from 109 grams to 99 grams per kilometer, or a sum total of 0.35 pound per mile. By now, we can see where this Z4/99d concept earned its name.

Other enhancements to the 99d include a lightweight lithium-ion battery, a new exhaust system, a lightened braking system, and adjustable racing suspension to drop the ride height by 1.2 inches. A body kit, 17.4-pound wheels, and a green-themed paintjob help round out the exterior package.

Inside, green trim pieces stand out against the rest of the dark interior. A new steering wheel, aluminum pedals, and carbon seats also find a home inside the 99d cabin.

As the AC Schnitzer 99d is just a concept car, it’s not for sale. In its current form, the 99d reportedly would cost around 149,000 euros, or $210,000. And that’s a large amount of dough, though we’re expecting Efficient Performance technology to start trickling into the product line in the near future.
