Nissan used this week's Geneva Motor Show to show off its new Hi-Cross Concept. The compact, eco-friendly crossover may not be headed for production as it stands, but it will certainly influence the look of all future Nissan crossovers.
The Hi-Cross Concept wears clear Nissan DNA, immediately recalling a family resemblance to the upcoming 2013 Pathfinder, along with the existing Rogue, Murano, Juke, and European-market Qashqai models. Nissan's signature V-shaped grille dominates the Hi-Cross' front end, with wide, boomerang LED headlight clusters helping to imbue a planted stance on the crossover. Around back, high-mounted LED taillights echo the front lights' boomerang shape, though are more square and upright on the Hi-Cross' hatch. A strong character line runs just below the beltline from fore of the A-pillar to the D-pillar, 21-inch alloy wheels, and bulging wheel arches define the car's profile, and are supposed to become hallmarks for the brand.
Powering the Hi-Cross Concept is a hybrid drivetrain. Lithium-ion batteries power an electric motor that is coupled to a direct-injected 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine; either power source can send its power through Nissan's Xtronic continuously variable transmission to all four wheels.
Nissan says that the Hi-Cross Concept is not slated for production, but should give us a good look at what the next-generation Nissan Rogue (and the European Qashqai) will look like. At 183.5 inches long, 72.8 inches wide, 65.7 inches tall, and riding on a 109.4-inch wheelbase, the Hi-Cross is within a fraction of an inch of the Rogue in almost every dimension.
