General Motors Sales Slide 6.1 Percent in January; Volt Up 88 Percent

General Motors is having a bit of a head-scratching moment: not only was the automaker down 6.1 percent last month, its sales leaders were the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, and Chevrolet Volt. In any case, the General sold 167,962 units last month. Buick: Down 23.1 Percent to 10,208 Buick sales were down nearly a quarter last month: the brand sold 10,208 units last month, down 23.1 percent from the same time last year. That slide was thanks mostly to the now-discontinued Lucerne sedan, which was down 85 percent to 421 units. The surviving models weren’t so hot, either: the Enclave was down 28.1 percent to 3124 sales, while the Regal was down 20.6 percent to 1855 sales. The LaCrosse stayed largely flat, edging up just 6.4 percent to 4013 sales, and the Verano sold 795 units. Cadillac: 8924 Sales, Down 29.1 Percent Cadillac, meanwhile, continues to struggle with a lack of models: sales of the discontinued DTS sedan were down 93.5 percent to 89 sales, and the STS was down 92.8 percent to 26 sales. Again, the surviving models didn’t fare as well, either: the CTS sedan was down 30.8 percent to 3019 sales, while the Escalade was down 34.9 percent to 985 sales. The Escalade ESV was down 10.3 percent to 531 sales, while the EXT variant was down 29.4 percent to 108 sales. The brightest spot in the Cadillac brand was the SRX, which stayed about flat: it went down 1.7 percent to 4166 sales, enough to give the SRX the top spot among the Caddies. Chevrolet: 123,864 Sales, Down 1.2 Percent Chevy had the best performance of any of the GM brands, down just 1.2 percent to 123,864 sales. The charge was led mostly by its passenger cars: the Cruze was up 10.4 percent last month to 15,049 sales, while the Malibu mid-size sedan edged up 4.1 percent to 14,676 units sold. The Impala sold an impressive 16,009 units last month, up 5.4 percent from last year, and the Sonic returned impressive figures with 5712 sales. As for the most improved models, there were some interesting inclusions: the best model was the Volt, which rose 87.9 percent to 603 sales, and the Colorado pickup, which rose 30.3 percent to 2872 sales. The Suburban sold 2935 units, up 25.3 percent, even though the smaller Tahoe dropped 24.4 percent to 3995 sales, and the Equinox crossover edged up 6.3 percent to 13,662 sales, despite the larger Traverse dropped 22.8 percent to 6640 sales. The Avalanche pickup was up 15.7 percent to 1617 sales. As usual, the Camaro dominated the Corvette in sales: the less-expensive Camaro sold 5709 units (1973 more than its Ford Mustang arch rival), up 19.9 percent from last year, while the Corvette tumbled 12.8 percent to 629 units sold. Another iconic model, the Silverado, dropped 4.7 percent to 26,850 models sold, but the truck still wins the title of most popular GM product by a margin of almost two to one. GMC: Down 9.7 Percent to 24,966 Sales Like Chevrolet, GMC’s most improved model is a small pickup truck: it’s the Canyon, which jumped 52.6 percent to 1059 sales. That didn’t make it the volume leader, however: that title goes to the Sierra pickup, which sold 9517 units last month, though down 10.4 percent from last year. Elsewhere around the brand, the Acadia crossover mirrored its Chevrolet counterpart and dropped 14.9 percent to 4870 sales. The same can’t be said for the Terrain: while the Equinox was up, the Terrain was down 11.3 percent to 5649 units sold. The Yukon was down 2.6 percent to 2022 sales, and the Yukon XL was down 30.3 percent to 1011 sales. The Savana van, meanwhile, was the only other positive model: it was up 16.7 percent to 838 sales.
