Gazoo Racing Unveils Turbo- and Supercharged Toyota GT86 Concept

Longtime Toyota tuning partner Gazoo Racing will show a concept version of the Toyota GT86 -- sold here as the Scion FR-S -- at this weekend's 24 Hours of Nürburgring race. The car, called the GRMN Sports FR concept, packs far more power than a regular Toyota GT86 thanks to the addition of forced induction.

Gazoo says its car has a turbochargerand a supercharger to bolster the output of the 2.0-liter boxer-four engine. That engine is nominally rated for 197 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque in the U.S.; Gazooclaims the Sports FR concept makes 320 hp and 310 lb-ft. The car is said to weigh 2816 pounds and it rides on new 18-inch wheels, up from the stock 17-inch wheels.

Inside, the radio has been removed and replaced with three performance gauges. The rear seat also has been eliminated and replaced with a small roll cage, as well as mounts for the harnesses that loop through the new racing bucket seats. Visual changes outside comprise new front and rear bumpers, as well as a large rear wing.

Although Gazoo Racing is merely a tuning company and this version of the GT86 is just a concept, we have strong reason to expect special versions of the Scion FR-S to arrive in our market. Scion will try to launch a new version of the FR-S every year, possibly including a supercharged version to keep pace with a future turbocharged version of the car's mechanical twin, the Subaru BRZ.

Gazoo Racing also will be fielding several race cars at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring event: a pair of Toyota GT86s, as well as a Lexus LFA.
