Gazoo Racing Returns to 24 Hours of Nurburgring with Lexus LFA, Toyota GT86s

The Lexus LFA is no stranger to the Nurburgring Nordschleife--it's been racing on the Green Hell since 2008, two years before it was offered to the buying public --but it's bringing some friends to this year's 24 Hours of Nurburgring endurance race party: a pair of Toyota GT86s.

It's been four years since the LFA, then a preproduction car, first took to the German racetrack. It finished sixth in the SP8 class and 121st overall. It finished fourth in its class in 2009; shortly before production models reached owners' driveways in 2010, it took first in its class. It hit third place last year.

This year, Toyota’s racing house Gazoo Racing is back with a specially tuned LFA, but it's also bringing two other cars along for the ride: a pair of race-prepped Toyota GT86s (cars we know better as the Scion FR-S in the United States).

If you're secretly hoping for some wild, massive-engined GT86 with nitrous injection, you might be disappointed to hear these cars will be largely stock. The GT86 will run in what's called the SP3 class, which indicates between 1750 and 2000 cc of displacement, and natural aspiration. Considering the stock GT86 has a 2.0-liter I-4, the racer will almost certainly have the same 200-horsepower motor --mated to the same six-speed manual transmission – as the road-going model.

When the 552-horsepower LFA takes to the Green Hell this weekend, it'll face off against all kinds of V-8, V-10, and V-12 powered cars like the Ferrari 458 Italia, Chevrolet Corvette, and Aston Martin Zagato. The GT86s, meanwhile, will duke it out against cars like the Renault Clio and Honda S2000.

Qualifying begins at the Nurburgring tomorrow, and the race begins at 3:00 PM local time on May 19.
