Frankfurt 2013: Rolls-Royce Phantom Gains Celestial One-Off Model

Based on the already exquisite Rolls-Royce Phantom Extended Wheelbase, a new Celestial one-off model debuting at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show adds several special touches to celebrate a decade of BMW ownership of Rolls-Royce.

BMW took ownership of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars over a decade ago, and at midnight on January 1, 2003, the first new Phantom rolled out of the company's factory in Goodwood, England. The special-edition pays tribute to that with a unique Starlight Headliner. Usually a $9750 option in a Rolls-Royce Phantom, the unique headliner features hundreds of fibre optic points designed to mimic a starry night sky. For the Celestial model, Rolls-Royce has painstakingly arranged the light points so they exactly match the arrangement of constellations in the sky on the night of January 1, 2003.

Hand-stitched lines in the headliner help define each of the many depicted constellations. Rolls-Royce even says it considered the reflection of the headliner in the rear drinks compartment cover, and arranged the stars for the best reflection possible.

Other tweaks include special "Dusk" dark-blue interior leathers, four diamonds embedded into the analog clock, and engraved wheel center caps. The Rolls-Royce Phantom also receives a special picnic set with engraved glasses and Nymphenburg porcelain plates. The Spirit of Ecstasy statue atop the grille is illuminated from below, which Rolls-Royce says, "Elegantly alludes to the car's ethereal theme."

In addition to celebrating ten years' of BMW ownership, the Rolls-Royce Phantom is designed to remind potential buyers of the countless ways they can customize their car. Nearly every Phantom and three-quarters of all Rolls-Royce Ghost models feature some degree of customization under what Rolls terms its Bespoke offerings. A price for the Celestial edition has not been announced, but the standard Rolls-Royce Phantom Extended Wheelbase starts at a lofty $479,590, including destination fees and the gas guzzler tax.
