Land Rover is getting ready to retire the first-generation Defender after a long, 63-year run. To preview the next-generation Defender – which LR has promised us to have on the market in 2015 – are two concepts that show the direction the venerable SUV will go.
A surprise unveiling, the DC 100 Sport Concept gives us a look at how the future Defender line will shape up. Ready for beach duty, the DC 100 Sport loses the brick-shaped silhouette of the DC 100 in favor of a chopped-top, convertible setup. Similar to the topless Defenders of yore, the DC 100 Sport looks ready to take on the dunes with seating for two, lowered stance, and its canary-yellow paint job. It maintains the B-pillar from the hard top DC 100, which gives the Sport more of an oversized dune buggy look. It also rides slightly lower, emphasizing the car’s width relative to its 100-inch wheelbase – it looks more planted and stockier than its hard-roofed brother.
The DC 100 Concept is similar to the original Defender, with its squared-off greenhouse, three-door bodystyle, and go-anywhere ability. While the design of the DC 100 may not be the final look of the next Defender, it is clearly a descendant of the original brought into the 21st century – the DC 100 wears many cues from current Land Rovers, such as the circular headlamps and horizontal grille similar to that on the new Range Rover Evoque. And Land Rover has guaranteed us that the DC 100 has a hose-out interior, just like the Defender.
