Ford of Great Britain has recently released the Ford SuperSportVan (SSV), their latest Le-Mans inspired project and addition to their historic line of Sportvans.

Guaranteed to put a smile on any delivery man’s face, Ford of Great Britain recently released the one-of-a-kind Ford SuperSportVan (SSV), making it the latest addition to their line of iconic Sportvans.

The SSV’s biggest modification is Ford’s five-cylinder 3.2-liter Duratorq TDCi engine, which puts out 197 horsepower, a whopping 347 lb-ft of torque, and is mated to a a six-speed gearbox. By comparison, the normal Transit found roaming British streets has a smaller diesel engine rated at 138 horsepower.

And to make sure the SSV stands out from the lowly Transits, the project includes top to bottom exterior embellishments like Le Mans-style bonnet stripes, twin exhausts, front and rear spoilers, low profile tires, side skirts, and flared wheel arches.

"The Transit has a strong reputation for its robustness and practicality,” explained Steve Clary, commercial vehicles director for Ford of Britain. “We wanted to add some contemporary fun and also showcase our engineers’ skill and enthusiasm.”

This is not the first time Ford has made a Supervan; the original Supervan debuted in 1971 and was based a Ford GT40 sports racing car. A 5.0-liter V8 engine, which was mounted in the van’s cargo area, launched the Supervan from 0 to 60 mph in 7 seconds, while achieve a top speed of 150 mph. Here’s a brief rundown of the Supervan lineage:

  • Supervan II, released in 1981, was based off another previous Le-Mans car and was powered by a Cosworth V8.
  • Supervan III, released in 1995, produced 650 horsepower from a Cosworth HB F1 V8 engine.
  • The Ford World Rally Transit made the switch to diesel power with a 2.4-liter Duratorq DI engine with 162 horsepower and 302 lb-ft of torque.
Included below are videos of the original 1971 Supervan as well as the 1995 Supervan 3.
