Ford’s implementation of the EcoBoost V-6 engine in the Ford F-150 pickup truck has been a big sales success, with the company announcing today that it sold the 500,000th EcoBoost-equipped pickup after three years on the market. So far in 2014, the EcoBoost engine outsells all other F-150 engine choices and makes up 45 percent of total Ford F-150 sales.
When Ford first announced the EcoBoost powertrain for the Ford F-150 for 2011, the idea was that this twin-turbocharged V-6 could stand in for a V-8 in terms of power and capacity while providing better gas mileage. The 3.5-liter Ecoboost V-6 joined the existing 3.7-liter V-6 and 5.0- and 6.2-liter V-8 engines in the Ford F-150 lineup and offered towing capacity equal to that of the larger V-8. Ford says that the two V-6 engines have made up more than 57 percent of all F-150 retail sales over the past 4 months.
No other pickup truck competitors offer a turbocharged gasoline powertrain like the EcoBoost, and the Ram 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado both only offer one gasoline V-6 option. Both of these trucks have V-6 take rates less than 20 percent, according to Ford, as V-8s generally dominate the truck market. (The Ram 1500 also offers a fuel-efficient turbodiesel V-6.) The redesigned, all-aluminum 2015 Ford F-150, though, will continue to move forward with this EcoBoost V-6 strategy, as it will offer a smaller 2.7-liter V-6 EcoBoost engine in addition to the existing 3.5-liter EcoBoost. This new powertrain will also feature an auto start-stop feature which should increase city fuel economy.
