Ford of Europe says it sold the second most cars in Europe behind Volkswagen in 2008. Ford of Europe has taken the number two spot even with falling sales.
Ingvar Sviggum, Ford of Europe’s head of marketing, sales, and service, gives a nod to the new (and much anticipated) Ford Fiesta for helping overtake Opel in sales volume. With the increasing sales volume, Ford of Europe has increased its European market share by 0.1 percent to 8.6 percent. Ironically, the battle for the second biggest seller in Europe has turned into a fight between American owned companies.
Sviggum says that Ford’s market share increase “is clear recognition of our strong product portfolio which puts us in a better position than many.” Sviggum was elated that the Fiesta launch was so successful and that it had become the best selling car in the United Kingdom. The Fiesta is now Ford of Europe’s second best selling car behind the [European] Focus.
This news only makes us anticipate the U.S. launch of the Fiesta even more and hope that more of Ford’s and GM’s European products find their way Stateside.
