Ford Motor Company Sales Slip 5.0 Percent in April; Edge Up, Escape Down

It was a mixed month for Ford Motor Company: while a select few models experienced their best months of April in years, total sales of Ford and Lincoln products totaled 180,350, some 5.0 percent less than the same time period last year.

With 174,042 sales, down 4.7 percent from April 2011, Ford fared better than Lincoln, which tumbled 12.8 percent to 6308 sales. Here are the big winners and losers:

While it was a good month for Ford's higher fuel economy models, it didn't spell success for either the Fiesta or Escape, both of which suffered more than their larger siblings. Sales of the Fiesta dropped 43.9 percent to 5135 units, while the Escape was down 20.0 percent to 16,986 units; however, the Escape is about to be replaced by an all-new model. The Focus and Edge, comparably, did much better: sales of the Focus jumped 12.5 percent to 19,425 units, and the Edge rose 12.4 percent to 10,520 sales. Ford's best-selling F-150 pickup truck remains on the top of the heap moving 4.4 percent more trucks to a grand total of 47,453 units.

While the Ford Fusion continued its reign as Ford Motor Company's secondbest-selling, moving 21,610 units last month, the Lincoln MKZ upon which it's based hasn't seen as much success. Sales of the MKZ were down 26.8 percent last month, totaling just 1863 units. But things could be worse: the aging Navigator tumbled 11.1 percent, ending last month with just 537 sales.

Blame the Navigator's slide on the continued success of Ford and Lincoln's large crossovers, which were some of the biggest winners of the month. Sales of the facelifted Flex shot up 41.4 percent to 2724 units, and the Flex's platform-mate, the Lincoln MKT, jumped 43.4 percent to 654 units.

Pound for pound, however, it was the Lincoln MKS' month. The large sedan received a facelift for the 2013 model year – which is already on sale – and may have only sold 1298 units, less than a quarter of the Taurus upon which it's based, but it was up 56.8 percent over April 2011. Credit the MKS' recent facelift and minor updates.
