Ford Launches New Incentives Program Targeting Import Buyers

In response to General Motors’ latest round of incentives, Ford today launched its own incentives program -- although it isn’t limited only to Toyota drivers.

While GM hopes to target owners of Toyota and Lexus vehicles affected by the current rash of recalls, Ford’s program is open to any owner of a Toyota, Lexus, Scion, Honda, and Acura vehicle, so long as it was manufactured in or after 1995. These customers will be eligible for an extra $1000 off the purchase of any new Ford, Lincoln, or Mercury vehicle.

“GM made a move yesterday, and we’re remaining competitive with what’s going on in the marketplace,” said Robert Parker, a Ford spokesman.

Ford, like GM, is hoping to benefit from Toyota’s recent rash of bad luck. Toyota has legally been forced to cease production and sales of eight of the vehicles included in the 2.3 million vehicle recall, which may help place Ford in a position on those who normally shop Toyota showrooms.

“It depends on how this all plays out and how fast Toyota gets this behind them,” said Alan Mulally, Ford CEO, when asked during a conference call if Ford saw an opportunity to capitalize on Toyota’s position. “But with people needing vehicles, there is an opportunity that they will be looking at Ford products.”

Ford’s incentives program runs through March 1, and can be added to any other incentive currently offered on any Ford product.
