Almost right on the heels of its release of last year's winning entry, Ford announced that it will once again stage an AppLink Developer Challenge, bringing together application developers to compete on whose car-friendly smartphone application is best.
It'll be Ford's second year at the TechCrunch Disrupt Hackathon next month in San Francisco staging the AppLink Developer Challenge. This year 10 teams will pit their applications against each other while using Sync's application programming interface, or API, to integrate the apps with Sync voice activation.
The announcement comes quickly after the re-release of Roximity--a GPS-based daily deals application that can instantly find Groupon-like deals based on your location and deal preferences--which now fully integrates with Sync AppLink. Drivers can now push a button and talk to Roximity (through Sync) to find local deals, in a similar fashion to AppLink's 10 other applications, which include NPR, MOG, and iHeartRadio.
While Ford hasn't released any significant details about what this year's victors will win, it's safe to say the top application will gain final certification by Ford, allowing a Sync AppLink-capable version of the app to be released to the public. Ford estimates that the total AppLink-equipped population is over one million cars, which includes cars like the Fiesta, Focus, and upcoming Fusion and excludes Ford and Lincoln cars equipped with MyFord or MyLincoln Touch.
The Hackathon kicks off September 9, which gives us enough time to ask the question: what do you want to see come out of this competition? Voice-activated pizza ordering? Automatic Foursquare check-in? Something crazier? Let us know in the comments below.
