To withstand the extra oomph from Ford's upcoming EcoBoost engines, the company has announced a "beefed-up" six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission. Code named '6F55,' the new tranny will be able to stand up to the higher torque demands of the new twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6.
The new gearbox is based on the same six-speed transmission found in cars like the Taurus and Sable. It has been optimized to handle the higher operating temperatures associated with a turbocharged engine. To do so, Ford used larger transfer and final drive gears, improved input and output carriers, and a new differential case.
The torque converter features some durability enhancements that Ford says will improve drivability and give drivers a more connected feeling. On the MKS and MKT a second roll restrictor boss was added to limit powertrain movement during acceleration and therefore reduce noise, vibration and harshness.
For now, it seems the new 6F55 transmission will be exclusively offered with the new 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine. It will first launch on the 2010 MKS, before making its way to the new 2010 Taurus SHO and other vehicles equipped with EcoBoost.
