Ford Fiesta ST To Get 180 Horsepower, Launch in Europe by Late 2012

Good news for anyone who finds the Ford Fiesta too tame: The U.K.’s Autocar says a high-performance Fiesta ST will debut in less than two years’ time. The report says the Fiesta ST would be powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine producing around 180 horsepower mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

Such an engine already exists in the Ford stable -- in September 2009, the company unveiled a 1.6-liter EcoBoost turbocharged engine rated for 180 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. The four-cylinder was slated for use in the European C-Max, but as it touts 180 horsepower, it seems like a reasonable powertrain candidate for a hotted-up Fiesta. In fact, Ford hopes that 90 percent of its American products will be offered with EcoBoost engines by 2013.

The American-market Fiesta has just one engine choice, a naturally aspirated 1.6-liter four-cylinder. With power ratings of 120 horsepower and 112 pound-feet, it’s efficient but unlikely to set enthusiasts’ hearts racing. The car’s standard manual gearbox has just five forward speeds, not the six predicted for an ST model.

A go-fast Fiesta has been confirmed for American consumption; Ford recently released a limited-run, 132-horsepower Fiesta S1600 in the U.K., and told us that while the S1600 wasn’t coming to the U.S., “There are future performance-oriented models intended for North America.”

If a Fiesta ST does launch here in late 2012 or early 2013, it will hit dealerships around the same time as the long-promised 247-horsepower Focus ST. The Focus ST will be available only as a five-door hatchback, and we expect the same of the Fiesta ST.
