Ford Expanding F-150 Airbag Recall to 1.2 Million Vehicles, Includes 2006 Lincoln Mark LT

According to a report from The Associated Press, Ford is planning to expand an earlier recall of the Ford F-150 to include 1.2 million vehicles. The recall affects model-years 2004 through 2006, and addresses reports of unexpected airbag deployment, which may be due to a short circuit within the steering wheel.

Ford first recalled 144,000 pickups in February after receiving 238 reports of airbags deploying unexpectedly. The automaker was reportedly pressured into issuing the recall by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, who had been investigating the airbag issue since 2009.

According to NHTSA’s recall report, repairs on a limited number of F-150s began in March. The documents also say that about 1.2 million vehicles may be affected (including some 2006 Lincoln Mark LT trucks), and that Ford is now expanding its recall effort. To correct the issue, Ford will install insulation around a clockspring in the F-150’s steering wheel. Recall letters will be sent to vehicle owners beginning May 9.
