Ford, Dodge Upgrade Taurus Police Interceptor, Charger Pursuit

Because the newest crop of cop cars weren't menacing enough, Ford and Dodge have seen fit to upgrade their offerings for 2013. Ford has added another engine option to its Taurus-based Police Interceptor, while Dodge has given the fuzz the right to order all-wheel drive on the Charger Pursuit.
Despite not offering a V-8 engine, Ford is confident that law enforcement officers will be more than happy with the Police Interceptor's array of V-6 powerplants. Now, the Blue Oval has added a third choice for the sedan: the same 3.7-liter V-6 available in the Explorer-based Police Interceptor utility. The 3.7-liter is rated at 305 hp and 279 lb-ft of torque and is mated to a six-speed automatic. Customers can choose to pair the 3.7-liter with either front- or all-wheel drivetrains. Fuel economy figures for the front-drive 3.7-liter model aren’t yet available, but a Police Interceptor fitted with the 3.7-liter and all-wheel-drive returns 18/25 mpg (city/highway). From what we can tell, the engine slots in nicely between the other two engine choices: a 288-hp, 3.5-liter V-6, or the more potent 365-hp, twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V-6, which is available only with all-wheel-drive.
Speaking of which, Ford’s advantage in being the only manufacturer to offer all-wheel-drive on a police interceptor has come to an end. For 2013, Dodge will offer all-wheel-drive as an option on Charger Pursuit models fitted with the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8. 2013 Charger Pursuit models otherwise soldier on uncharged: engine choices include the 370-hp, 5.7-liter V-8 and a 292-hp, 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6. The all-wheel drive Charger Pursuit has yet to be tested, but the manufacturer expects it to get 25 mpg on the highway. Rear-wheel drive models are rated at 18/27 mpg for the V-6 and 16/25 with the V-8.
