The list of excuses you can give to Ford and Toyota for a late car payment has gotten a whole lot shorter.
Both companies now use barcode technology similar to that found on Netflix DVD rentals to find out exactly when a customer sends out a payment.
Computers developed by DST Output of Kansas City, Mo., scan the envelope when it arrives at the Post Office and send the information off to Toyota Financial Services and Ford Motor Credit Co.
The same technology lets the companies know if their bills reached their destination in the first place, meaning that if they send a late notice, they already know for sure the customer received the original bill (so don’t try and claim you didn’t).
