Ford’s October Sales: 2012 Explorer Wins Big; Car Sales Flatline, Lincoln Volumes Slide

The Blue Oval continued an upward march in the month of October: Ford Motor Company posted an overall sales increase of 6.2 percent over October 2010 to 167,803 vehicles sold, almost completely thanks to sales of Ford SUVs and Trucks.

Ford: 161,709 Sales, Up 12.6 Percent

Sales of Ford cars, trucks, and SUVs were up 12.6 percent overall. The bulk of the increases came from Ford’s utilities and trucks, particularly the Explorer: the new-for-2012 SUV posted 11,987 sales, a 224.7 percent increase from last year. Its little sibling, the Escape, was also up 30.6 percent to 19,046 sold, and big brother Expedition was up 34.5 percent to 3,773 sold. The Explorer’s sales numbers have now clearly passed those of Ford’s other crossover, the Edge--sales of the funky crossover were down 10.1 percent to 9161 sold.

Ford trucks also had a good month: the halo F-Series truck was up 7.1 percent year-over-year, but it was enough for 52,511 sold. The F-Series has sold more than 50,000 per month for the second straight month. But the F-Series’ aging sibling, the Ranger pickup, also had a great month--it was up 63.5 percent to 7270 sold, which was enough to top the Taurus, Fiesta, and Mustang. The Econoline and Club Wagon were down 7.8 percent to 6806 vans sold, and the Transit Connect van was down 15.4 percent to 2180 sold.

Ford cars, overall, were up 0.4 percent. While the little Fiesta was up 7.2 percent to 4124 cars sold, the new Focus was almost exactly even with last year, selling 12,386 models last month. Atop the sedan range was the Fusion, as usual, which sold 18,094 cars last month, a 4.2 percent increase over 2010. Meanwhile, the upmarket Taurus slipped 1.5 percent to 5,438 units sold, and the iconic Mustang tumbled 7.9 percent to 4,898 cars sold. Lastly, the Crown Victoria continued its march to oblivion after the model ended production last month: Ford sold 1,824 examples in October.

Lincoln: Down 10.8 Percent, 6,094 Sold

Lincoln sales slid 10.8 percent, with Ford’s upmarket brand selling just 6,094 units last month. That slide is thanks to fewer sales of three cars: the MKS, Town Car, and MKT. The Town Car, which ceased production earlier this year, sold only 296 cars last month, down 70 percent from 2010. The MKT sport utility vehicle also slid 27.1 percent, the most of any Lincoln, to 369 sold last month, and the MKS sedan went down 9.6 percent to 981 sales.

On the other hand, the MKZ sedan was up 5.6 percent to 1,953 sales, while Lincoln sold 1,765 MKX crossovers, 5.4 percent more than last year. The big Navigator sold 730 units last month, exactly the same as this time last year.
